Why I'm Running
I went to a council meeting.
I saw no one like me.
I am a woman, a teacher, an artist, a doula, a mother and wife. I was not born here, but I chose Lafayette to be the place to raise my family. I grew up in a small town, went to college in the biggest city in the country, and see the potential of Lafayette.
I will listen. I will question. I will learn. I will look at the whole picture. My children will know a different Lafayette, and I want it to be a better Lafayette.
I have a different perspective.
Lafayette is not made up of one type of person. The council should reflect the City-Parish. There should be diversity of ethnicity, age, income, political views, interests, and life experience.
People may move here for business, but they stay for the arts and community.
To keep that community strong, we need to:
-Diversify our economy. We can't rely solely on the oil business to keep us booming.
-Strengthen and support our schools, working closely with the Lafayette Parish School Board.
-Closely monitor the budget to ensure safety, growth, and transparency. More can be accomplished when citizens trust their local government.
-Recognize the importance of arts and culture in this community. Lafayette is teeming with artists of all kinds. This talent is a powerful tool that can be used in collaboration with local government. A city that supports arts and culture is a city that attracts the best and brightest in all fields.
-Improve daily life, such as public safety, sidewalks, traffic, bike paths, public transportation, drainage, and parks.
-Listen to the people and represent them.
